Suncoast Caravan Tassie Travels

Touring Tasmania with Bruce & Jenny - Part 2

If you’re looking for a unique and breathtaking holiday experience that will stay with you forever, look no further than Tasmania, Australia. This beautiful island is full of natural wonders, captivating wildlife and exciting activities that are sure to provide an unforgettable adventure.

One destination in particular, Huonville Caravan Park, stands out to us due to its proximity to some of the most stunning attractions in the region. At Huonville Caravan Park, we found that visitors can explore the stunning Tasmanian wilderness at their own pace and comfort. The park has numerous facilities for caravaners including powered sites, unpowered sites and plenty of room for large recreational vehicles. There are also amenities such as hot showers and a camp kitchen where campers can cook their meals with ease.

But what we feel makes Huonville Caravan Park so special is its afternoon Tassie Devil Feeding Show. During this show visitors get to see up close four rare Tasmanian Devils being fed with a whole chicken; an event that will leave you mesmerised! Not only does Huonville Caravan Park give visitors a chance to witness these magnificent creatures up close but it also contributes towards preserving a healthy population of Tasmanian Devils by participating in a national preservation program. Unfortunately, their numbers have been decimated over recent years due to facial cancer disease but thankfully there is hope on the horizon as Australian scientists work tirelessly towards finding a cure for this devastating illness.

After visiting Huonville Caravan Park make your way southwards towards Recherche Bay, Cockle Creek, like we did. This popular picturesque spot is is the ultimate caravanning and camping destination for those seeking a sense of adventure and an unparalleled connection to nature. Camping at Cockle Creek is free and no booking is required however we noted that there is limited spots for large rigs. Be sure to take plenty of supplies as there are no shops nor services available in this remote part of Tasmania.

As the southernmost drivable point in Australia, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the pristine wilderness bordering the famed Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Boasting a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century, Cockle Creek was once a thriving settlement with over 2000 inhabitants and home to four bustling whaling stations. Today, the area pays tribute to its controversial past through the striking Adams Point bronze whale sculpture.

If you follow our itinerary the next stop on your Tasmanian tour should be Port Arthur; as you all probably know, this historical site was once a convict settlement before being preserved as an icon of Australian history today.

A lesser known Port Arthur tourism activity is a wilderness cruise with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys. This three-hour adventure tour, offers a unique perspective of the spectacular scenery that lies between Port Arthur and Eaglehawk Neck, taking you on a mesmerizing journey deep within Tasman National Park’s unspoiled wilderness.
