Pre-Trip Caravan Servicing Checklist: What to Check Before Your Next Adventure

by Jessie Taylor 17 Aug 2026

Your essential pre-trip servicing checklist!

Heading off on a caravan trip this holiday break? Before you hit the road, a quick pre-travel check can save you from breakdowns, blowouts, and unwanted surprises. Here's a simple checklist to run through before every big adventure, plus a guide to what a professional pre-travel service actually covers.

Why Pre-Travel Servicing Matters

Caravans that sit unused for weeks or months are prone to flat batteries, perished seals, and slow tyre leaks. Most issues are minor if caught early, but can turn into costly repairs or a ruined trip if they're missed. A short check before every departure, and a full service once a year or every 10,000km, keeps your van safe and road-ready.

Quick Pre-Travel Checklist

Tyres & Wheels

  • Check tyre pressure on the van and tow vehicle (including the spare).
  • Look for cracking, uneven wear, or bulges.
  • Check wheel nuts are torqued to correct spec (see manufacturer's specifications).

Brakes & Coupling

  • Test electric brakes are engaging correctly.
  • Check the breakaway cable is connected and the breakaway battery has charge.
  • Grease the coupling and hitch if required.

Electrical & Battery

  • Check battery charge and water levels (if applicable).
  • Test all interior and exterior lights, including indicators and brake lights.
  • Check solar panel connections and mounting is secure (if fitted).

Water & Gas

  • Check for leaks around water fittings and the hot water system.
  • Test the gas system and check bottles are within date and full.
  • Check smoke and gas alarms are working.

Seals & Body

  • Inspect roof, window, and door seals for cracking or gaps.
  • Check for water stains ingress inside cupboards or ceiling linings.
  • Check awning and annexe fittings are secure.

Suspension & Chassis

  • Check for rust or damage on the chassis.
  • Inspect suspension components and shackles.
  • Check the jockey wheel and stabiliser legs move freely.

Inside the Van

  • Secure loose items and check cupboard latches.
  • Test appliances (fridge, cooktop, hot water).
  • Check fire extinguisher is charged and in date.

How Often Should You Service a Caravan?

Most manufacturers recommend a full service once a year or every 10,000km, whichever comes first, with a visual check before every trip. If you're planning a long trip or the van has been sitting for a while, book a service a few weeks ahead so there's time to order parts if needed.

Book Your Pre-Travel Service

Running through this checklist yourself is a great start, but a few things (like break adjustment, wheel bearings, and gas certification) are best left to a qualified technician. Book your caravan in for a pre-travel service and head off with confidence.

FAQ

How long does a caravan pre-travel service take? A standard pre-travel service usually takes a half day to a full day, depending on what needs attention or which type of service you choose.

What's included in a caravan service? A typical service covers brakes, wheel bearings, tyres, chassis, coupling, and a general safety inspection of everything that keeps you van on the road. For a more comprehensive service including the interior or a wheel alignment. Just ask our friendly team for more information about our other types of services available.

Do I need to service my caravan every year even if I don't use it much? Yes. Seals, tyres, and batteries degrade with time as well as use, so an annual check is recommended even for low-use vans.
